Mulled Wine Recipe

I love a warming glass of mulled wine when the nights are dark and cold.  This is my best mulled wine recipe – friends and family love it – it goes down well in front of a glowing fire.

Update: This is perfect warmed in my Pressure King Pro (I’m sure it would work the same in Instant Pot or similar too).  I set it to ‘Slow Cook’ function and set the temperature to 65 deg C.  Set the timer for longer than you need so it doesn’t switch to ‘keep warm’ which is a higher temperature (I set mine to 24hours).

Ingredients

1 750 ml bottle red wine (inexpensive but palatable is best)
1 litre orange juice
0.5 litre apple juice
1 tsp whole cloves
1/2 tsp ground or whole allspice
1/2 cinnamon stick
Sprinkling of freshly ground nutmeg
100g light Muscovado sugar
Splash of brandy to taste

Optional-segments of orange and sultanas to add some floating (or sunken in the case of sultanas) interest.

Method

Put all ingredients (except brandy) together in a lidded pan, heat gently and be careful not to boil. I use a setting on my hob of 3 – it goes up to 10! Heat and stir until it is hot but drinkable and the flavour is good.

I like to leave my spices to roam around freely to get the flavours out quickly so you may want to either sieve the finished product or put the spices in a muslin bag or Spice Ball to contain them!

If you use a spice ball use one like this with some room for the spices to swish around in your mulled wine.  The shape of this one is perfect for cinnamon sticks too! (Click image for more information).

I bought the spice container in the picture – it worked great as it is the right shape for the cinnamon stick. With the fruit juice you feel like it might be doing you good. We made this recipe on Christmas Eve and then again on Christmas Day it was soooo nice.

Boxing Day 2017 – Made this for the first time in the electric pressure cooker (pressure king Pro) as described above. We put all the ingredients in set it on slow cook at 65 deg C and took the dog out for her walk. We came back to delicious hassle free mulled wine.
